A child may be a target of bullying but does not have to be a victim
Because bullying is a national issue which cannot be tackled by one person, the Shotokan Shitoryu Karate Association of New Zealand (SSKANZ) has joined forces with No Bullying Initiative (NBI) to try and address this national epidemic.
The SSKANZ programme promotes individual responsibility, empowerment and learning skills that will equip a child for life. SSKANZ endorses the No Bullying Initiative and looks forward to making a significant contribution in tackling bullying problems in New Zealand.
The chief instructor at SSKANZ, Sensei Johnny Ling explained that Karate requires a high level of athleticism as a way to avoid harm or damage. He said he views his club as a laboratory for self improvement where individuals are taught how to confront their own fears, how to lose gracefully and to make the most out of every experience.
SSKANZ aims to reach these goals by
-Teaching the art of fighting and self defence.
-Teaching self discipline and helping individuals to build their self confidence.
-Equipping individuals with the right attitude towards bullies by teaching them how to respond using both the traditional and modern sport karate which are approved by the World Karate Federation (WKF).
These tools are invaluable because most bullies will usually stay away from people who seem confident and are likely to defend themselves or stand up to them. This is in line with NBI’s mission which is : To give a voice to people who cannot speak for themselves and make the bully accountable.
